Who can buy the JAPAN RAIL PASS?

You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for the purpose of sightseeing, under the entry status of "temporary visitor". The entry status of temporary visitor, according to Japanese immigration law, allows a 90-day stay in Japan for the purpose of sightseeing. If you apply for a "stay for sightseeing" when you enter Japan, the immigration officer will stamp your passport as "temporary visitor", as shown below. In order to receive or use the JAPAN RAIL PASS, your passport must bear this stamp.

Please note that a dual national who entered Japan using their Japanese passport will not be able to exchange their voucher by presenting their unstamped non-Japanese passport.

Please note: If you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "Trainee", "Animator" or "Re-entry permit", you cannot exchange the voucher for a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Please note that according to the strict interpretation of Japanese immigration law, the status of "temporary visitor". is even different from other types of stays which are also only short-term.

Restrictions on use:

The JAPAN RAIL PASS is not valid for the "NOZOMI" and "MIZUHO" trains. (Pass holders must take the "HIKARI" or "KODAMA" trains.) If you wish to use the "NOZOMI" or "MIZUHO" service, you must pay the basic fare and the limited express fare, and for a 1st class car, the 1st class supplement. In this case, there is no discount with the JAPAN RAIL PASS.

How to exchange a voucher for a real pass:

We will send you the exchange voucher by registered mail. Please bring it with you to Japan. It cannot be reissued if lost. Upon arrival in Japan, your JR Pass exchange voucher can be exchanged for a JR Pass at most major stations, including both terminals of Tokyo Narita International Airport, Haneda Airport International Terminal, and Osaka Kansai International Airport. JR Pass exchange vouchers are valid for 3 months from the date of issue, so you cannot issue exchange orders more than 3 months before the date you wish to use them for the first time.

Refund:

In case of cancellation, 10% of the ticket price will be deducted and the ticketing fee will not be refunded. There will also be an administrative fee of CHF20.-. You will need to return the voucher to us so that we can refund you.
