Who is eligible for the JAPAN RAIL PASS?
1. Foreign tourists on short-term stays
The JR Pass is available to foreign visitors entering Japan under the "Temporary Visitor" visa status (tourist stays up to 90 days).
At immigration, you must receive a "Temporary Visitor" stamp or sticker in your passport. This document is strictly required to exchange and use the JR Pass.
Note: Automated gates (facial recognition) at airports do not automatically issue this stamp. Please use a staffed lane or explicitly ask an officer for the stamp.
2. Japanese nationals living abroad
Japanese citizens are also eligible to use the JR Pass if they:
- Hold a valid Japanese passport.
- Can provide official proof of continuous overseas residence for more than 10 consecutive years, issued by a Japanese embassy or consulate.
