Who can purchase the JAPAN RAIL PASS?

You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of "temporary visitor. Temporary Visitor entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 90 days for sightseeing. If you apply for a "stay for sightseeing" when you enter Japan, immigration officer will stamp your passport as "Temporary Visitor," as shown below. In order to receive or use JAPAN RAIL PASS, your passport must bear this stamp.

Please note that a person with dual citizenship who has entered Japan using their Japanese passport will not be able to exchange their voucher by showing their unstamped non-Japanese passport.

Caution:  you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "Trainee," "Entertainer," or "Reentry Permit," you cannot change the Exchange Order for a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, "Temporary Visitor" status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.

Restrictions of use:

The JAPAN RAIL PASS is not valid for "NOZOMI" trains and "MIZUHO" trains. (The pass holders must take "HIKARI" or "KODAMA" trains.).  If you wish to ride  "NOZOMI" or "MIZUHO" service, you must pay the basic fare and the limited express charge, and for a Green Car the Green Car surcharge. In this case there is no discount because of JAPAN RAIL PASS.

How to exchange voucher to actual pass:

We will send you by registered post the exchange voucher. Please bring it with you to Japan. It cannot be reissued in case of loss. On arriving in Japan, your JR Pass Exchange voucher  can be exchanged for a JR Pass at most major stations including both terminals of Tokyo Narita International Airport, International Terminal in Haneda Airport and Osaka Kansai International Airport. JR Pass Exchange Orders are valid for 3 months from the date of issue so you cannot issue Exchange Orders more after 3 months before the date you first want to use them.

Refund:

In case of cancellation 10% of the ticket price will be deduced and the issuing charge will not be reimbursed. There will also be a CHF20.- administrative costs involved. You will need to send us back the exchange voucher so we can refund you.
